Heroes and Villains – my\u00a0Comic Art window trail display<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Every year, Kendal hosts\u00a0the Lakes International Comic Art Festival with workshops, films, talks\u00a0and demonstrations by some of the world’s leading comic artists and writers. One of the event’s attractions is the town’s comic art window trail where shop and office windows are decorated by schools and artists. My photography studio window is part of the comic art window trail in this year’s Festival.\u00a0I have created a\u00a0display\u00a0featuring\u00a0photographs of the characters from Marvel and DC Comics,\u00a0entitled ‘Heroes and Villains’.\u00a0It combines\u00a0photography with\u00a0digital art and so I thought I would share a few of the images with you.<\/p>\n

None of the people appearing in these images are ‘models’ and I was so lucky to find such\u00a0talented\u00a0people who were willing to pose for my photos and who really look the part.<\/p>\n

Villains<\/h3>\n

The centre piece of my window comic art window trail display is a large print of The Joker. I photographed this on location (Manchester, not Gotham)\u00a0and I added the digital artwork in my spare time later. I love the design and colours used in the costume. It’s so well thought out, however\u00a0it was the Joker’s pose\u00a0that inspired\u00a0me to create the explosion scene in the background.<\/p>\n

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are two\u00a0of my favourite characters, and again the attention to detail in their costumes\u00a0is just amazing!\u00a0I took these\u00a0photos\u00a0on location in August and\u00a0I did a small amount of digital work in the Harley Quinn photo background – I love repeating patterns! There were so many images to choose from, it was difficult to decide which ones to use.<\/p>\n

I also had to do\u00a0some work\u00a0to\u00a0create the leaf background on the Poison Ivy image. There were a few leaves\u00a0on location\u00a0but just not enough for the image I wanted to create.\u00a0I gave this photo\u00a0a softer appearance to give it a sort of ‘painterly’ look.<\/p>\n

Heroes<\/h3>\n

The images of Cat Woman were taken in the studio with carefully controlled lighting. I created a set of\u00a0low-key dark background images as well as the one shown here. For this image\u00a0I\u00a0placed the lights on the left because I wanted to match the location of the sun.\u00a0All that was left to do then was\u00a0combine\u00a0it with\u00a0one of my\u00a0New York photos to create an image\u00a0that has\u00a0a movie poster\u00a0look to it.<\/p>\n

The image of the Spider-men was taken against a plain background. The floor had a tiled pattern which I thought would work well as a wall so I changed the foreground. After that, I included a skyscraper photo behind it to complete the rooftop illusion.<\/p>\n

My comic art window trail display in the studio\u00a0has loads more images featuring the same characters and a few others as well. Hopefully the images I have shown here\u00a0give a flavour of the display and how I create my fantasy art photos. I would like to thank everyone that took part in the photo shoots – you were all amazing (it’s not just you spidey)!<\/p>\n

The comic art window trail displays last longer, running for a few weeks\u00a0either side of\u00a0the main festival weekend.
